The cooler months are upon us. Along with all the holiday cheer and conversations about toys, food, and decorations, one should also remember that November has become a month for growing out your favorite style of beard or moustache. This is not simply due to the warmth that this can supply during the cold months, but it is more of a conversational piece to make aware the importance of prostate exams for men. Such as breast cancer awareness produces the color pink in all aspects of our life, the beard or moustache has become drenched with the same enriched symbolism. The Movember (named from the “mo” in moustache) community has raised over $559 million to date and funded many programs in numerous countries to help men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health problems (us.movember.com). The noticing of moustache growth throughout the month of November can immediately be associated with the subject matter of men’s health. Men become a walking and talking billboard system that can become the catalyst for a donation towards programs built for the benefit of fighting prostate cancer. It is estimated that 29,480 men will die of prostate cancer in 2014 and 1 in 7 will be diagnosed in their lifetime (www.cancer.org). Join the fight….grow a moustache. If possible, make a donation.
