July 4, Independence Day

July 4 is a holiday with patriotic celebrations including parades, concerts, fireworks and outdoor cookouts in The United States. This is the day in 1776, when the The United States of America formally declared independence from Great Britain (present day United Kingdom). The Declaration of Independence was authored by Thomas Jefferson of Virginia to announce the separation and independence of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain. The American revolution, between the American colonies and Great Britain, started in April 1775 at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. The war went on for eight years. The British surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia in October 1781 and the hostilities formally ended in 1783 with the signing of The Treaty of Paris.

John Adams, our 2nd President, and Thomas Jefferson, our 3rd President, both died on July 4, 1826. James Monroe, our 5th President, died on July 4, 1831, five years after Adams and Jefferson.

Happy Independence Day America, the 4th of July!
