Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.6%

The unemployment rate declined to 3.6% in April, the lowest since December 1969, according to the Employment Situation report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

 

New Opinion Letter

The Department issued a new Wage and Hour opinion letter regarding a virtual marketplace company and the status of independent contractors.

 

263,000 New Jobs

The U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs in April – bringing the total to 5.4 million new jobs since January 2017 – according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics today.

 

AHP Policy Statement

The Department issued a policy statement regarding Association Health Plans following a district court ruling in The State of New York v. United States Department of Labor.

Job Corps Scholars

Under the Job Corps Scholars Program, the Department will award up to 20 grants to help connect at-risk youth with job skills instruction and employment assistance.

Safety Enforcement

OSHA has fined a Texas storage tank manufacturing facility $281,108 for exposing workers to serious workplace hazards.

Wages Returned

After Department investigations, the owners and operators of 11 Louisiana restaurants have paid $461,754 in back wages and damages to 141 workers.

Casino Wages

The Department has secured a $3.36 million judgment against a Saipan casino developer for systemic wage violations by contractors.

Visa Violations

A Louisiana-based sweet potato farm will pay $105,000 in back wages and penalties to settle a Department lawsuit for H-2A visa program violations.

3.2% Wage Growth

American wages grew 3.2% year-over-year in April 2019. Average hourly earnings have grown at or above 3.0% for nine straight months.
