Downton Houston Rodeo Parade

DOWNTOWN RODEO PARADE

Saturday February. 29, 2020

Every February since 1938, the nation’s fourth largest city is transformed from a bustling metropolis to a down-home celebration of Western heritage. Decorative floats intermingle with thousands of men and women on horseback to fill the streets with hoof beats and marching bands. Enthusiastic Houstonians join out-of-town spectators to line the streets and sidewalks to be involved in one of Houston’s most popular celebrations!

The Beginning…
• Through the 1920s, the cattle industry began to grow along
the Texas Gulf Coast
• Despite two million cattle in the region, Houston ranked 37th
among livestock markets
• In 1930, business leaders and cattlemen began discussing
ways to capitalize on the tremendous potential of the region
• They learned that no large cattle market or packing center
had ever been developed in a city that didn’t have a wellknown livestock show
• In January of 1931, seven men met for lunch at the Texas
State Hotel and the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock
Exposition was born!
